St. Kate’s PLG and SAA co-hosted a successful evening of spring break fun at the East Side Freedom Library with archive planning, cataloging, and pizza! Truly, a librarians-gone-wild event.
Representing St. Kate’s MLIS were 16 students and 2 faculty. Present also were several members from the ESFL community. We volleyed about ideas for preserving Hmong Archives items as well as making them accessible via finding aids or the Evergreen ILS (which Dr. Lesniaski’s Library Systems course is building) or both.
By the time our crazy night ended we gained a greater sense of what the ongoing needs are at ESFL and how PLG and SAA might support their work. Be on the lookout for developments. We were also able to get to know one another better. Around eight volunteer catalogers, guided by two experts and one hyper enthusiast, cataloged 74 titles. We also finished five boxes of pizza and a bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water.
If you feel like you missed out, you did. But don’t worry. A similar event should come about soon. There are several thousand titles left that need to be cataloged.
